FAIR Crystal Principal Zoraba Ross receives Excellence in Education Award

When Zoraba Ross learned that he was being honored for the 2025 Excellence in Education Award from The Ohio State University’s College of Education and Human Ecology, he was deeply grateful, humbled and emotional.

“Receiving this award caused me to pause for a moment and reflect back to when I was a young “Black” boy going through the public education system and being told - more than once - that I was the “worst kid ever and won’t amount to anything.”  But even then, with the encouragement of a Black teacher/coach, I chose to believe that I was worthy. I chose to believe that my life had value, that my future had possibility,” said Ross.

“This honor belongs not only to me, but to my staff, colleagues, mentors, and friends in both Minnesota and Ohio who nominated me and to the students and staff I’ve had the privilege of serving throughout my career.”

Ross, currently serving in his ninth year as principal at FAIR School Crystal, graduated from The Ohio State University in 1988. Under his leadership, FAIR School Crystal has become a model for 21st-century learning rooted in equity, arts, and STEAM, fostering creativity and critical thinking through inquiry-based instruction. He is passionate about positively impacting the lives of students, families, colleagues and staff who cross his path.

Each year, the College of Education and Human Ecology, in collaboration with the college’s Alumni Society Board of Governors, honors alumni who have made outstanding contributions in their chosen fields, exemplifying the college’s legacy of service and excellence.

“Thirty one years ago, I received the Young Educator Award from [The Ohio State University]. Three decades later, this is a full circle moment I never could have imagined as that young “Black” boy. To every student, every young person, every dreamer who has ever been told they are not enough, let my story be a reminder. When people tell you that you’re not worthy, believe in yourself anyway. Never give up. Every one of us is worthy if we put our mind, our heart and our effort into it.”

Ross will be recognized and receive his award alongside other Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology honorees at the Hall of Fame and Alumni Awards on Oct. 2 in Columbus, OH.
